Modern living room in a Hong Kong apartment with a sofa and coffee table, measured out with floor tape

Buying furniture online in Hong Kong is convenient, but a screen can't tell you whether a sofa fits through your lift or how a fabric behaves in humid summers. This checklist covers what to confirm before you order, so the piece that arrives is the one you pictured.

1. Measure your space and your access routes

Most online furniture problems come from measurements, not taste. Before you browse, note down:

  • The wall length and ceiling height where the piece will sit
  • Door widths, lift interior size and door opening, and any tight corners in the corridor
  • Clearance you want to keep around it, such as walkways, windows and air conditioning units

Mark the footprint on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day. It is the quickest way to see whether a 240 cm sofa really works in your living room. Our guide to furniture delivery and lift access in Hong Kong goes deeper on what to ask building management.

2. Ask what the piece is actually made of

Product pages often say "solid" or "premium" without detail. Ask for specifics:

  • Frame: solid timber, engineered wood or metal, and how the joints are made
  • Upholstery: fabric type, leather grade, and whether covers are removable
  • Cushions: foam density, or down and feather blends, which feel very different and are priced differently
  • Tops on tables and cabinets: veneer, solid timber, sintered stone or marble

If a seller can't answer these clearly, treat that as useful information. You can read more in our sofa fabric guide and our comparison of sintered stone and marble dining tables.

3. Think about Hong Kong's climate

Humid summers and air conditioned winters are hard on furniture. Solid timber can move slightly with moisture, some leathers need regular conditioning, and light fabrics mark more easily in busy households. A good supplier will tell you honestly what suits your home and how to look after it. We cover this in our furniture care guide for Hong Kong homes.

4. Request samples before you commit

Colors look different on every screen and under every light. For anything upholstered, ask for fabric or leather samples and view them in your own home, in daylight and in the evening. Hold them next to your flooring and curtains. For custom pieces, you can browse our material samples before you decide.

5. Check what can be customized

In a small Hong Kong apartment, a few centimeters can decide whether a piece works. Ask whether the size, depth, fabric, leather, finish or configuration can be adjusted. With made to order furniture you can often change the length of a sofa, the height of a table or the layout of a sectional so it fits your room instead of the other way around. If you want to explore this, start with our custom furniture page.

6. Understand lead times and delivery

Ready made items may ship quickly, while made to order pieces take longer. At DSL, most custom pieces take around 6 weeks. Confirm the timeline in writing, and ask:

  • Who delivers, and whether the delivery team carries the piece up to your floor
  • Whether the piece arrives assembled or in sections
  • What happens if it can't get into the building
  • How delivery slots are coordinated with your building management

7. Know the after sales support

Ask who you contact if something arrives damaged or a seam looks wrong, how quickly they respond, and whether they will come back to fix it. A real person on WhatsApp or email who knows your order is worth more than a long warranty page.

8. Look for signs of a trustworthy seller

  • Clear photos, with real product details rather than only styled renders
  • Reviews you can verify, such as on Google
  • A business with a track record, not a site that appeared last month
  • Willingness to answer practical questions before you pay

A simple way to start

Choose one room, measure it, and write down your three priorities, for example seating for five, easy to clean, and fits a 90 cm doorway. Then share those with the seller. A good one will respond with suggestions, not just a price. If you are choosing a sofa, our sofa collection is a good place to begin, and if you are furnishing a whole home or working with a designer, see our trade and designer page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to buy furniture online in Hong Kong?

Yes, provided you check the seller's reviews, ask for material details and samples, and get the lead time and delivery terms confirmed in writing before paying.

How do I know a sofa will fit my apartment?

Measure the room, the doorway, the lift and the corridor, then compare them with the sofa's full dimensions, including depth and height. If any route is tight, ask about a sectional or modular design that arrives in sections.

Can I see fabric or leather in person first?

Ask for samples. Seeing a swatch in your own lighting is far more reliable than judging by a photo.

How long does custom furniture take?

Most DSL custom pieces take around 6 weeks, and we confirm the timeline when you place the order.
